What should I do right after I get arrested?

When an individual is placed under arrest by the police, they should be polite but should also exercise their constitutional right to ask for an attorney.  They should not answer any questions while they are in custody or while they have been arrested.  They should ask for an attorney and speak with the attorney first.

If someone is being questioned and suspected of a crime, should they answer the questions or contact an attorney?

Were often asked that if the police call and ask us to voluntarily come into a police station to answer some questions because they are suspected of committing a crime, under no condition should they go to the police station without an attorney.  Our advice is that they should not answer any questions and they should seek legal counsel first.

Should I let the police search my car if they ask?

We are often asked as to whether or not people should voluntarily consent to the search of their vehicles by the police.  The answer is no.  You should not let the police search the vehicle under almost all circumstances.  You should request that the police obtain a warrant.

The police want to search my home, should I allow them to do that?

We often asked whether or not an individual should consent and give the police permission to search their home.  The answer is no.  You should firmly but politely tell the police that they cannot have permission to search your home without a warrant.
